Day 2
)After about 2 hours of sleep on the 6.5 hour flight over the ocean, we arrived in France at 7:00 AM Sunday morning. We were checked into the hotel at 9 AM and we were out on the "town" by 11 AM.
T's notes from the first day included: 1. sleep; 2. if you don't get enough sleep, drink lots of caffeine and eat sugar; 3. take your shoes off on the plane; 4. curl up to sleep (it is more comfortable); 5. not sleeping on the plane causes jet lag! H noted that customs let us right in without asking for anything!
Highlights of Day 1 included: L'Arc de Triomphe; Notre Dame; and Sainte Chapelle. We were done with dinner by 8 PM and the girls were out cold by 8:20. H wrote: " The bell at Notre Dame was huge. Then we had to wait until we could go to the top. Eek! It was tall. I looked down once, whew!, never do that! It was pretty though." Everything is so old and so grand. It just doesn't compare to an American city! And, everything people tell you about Parisiens being grouchy is just not true. Speak a little French and they are quite nice, even when you have to send back your meal because it is covered in nuts!
This morning we got up around 9 AM and headed straight for the Eiffel Tower. Even for a couple of folks who don't like heights,(H and I didn't like the ride up or standing near the edge), the view was wonderful. P sat at the bottom and D and T were brave enough to take the stairs down from the 2nd level!) the view was phenomenal! En Francais, c'est magnifique! We ate lunch outside at a Parisien cafe and then we went to Les Goutes de Paris (the sewers). We learned that 1.2 cubic meters of waste from Paris is treated each day. T observed in her journal, "I would not like this job, the smell is vomitrocious and stepping in someone's poop is disgusting!" After the sewer tour, we walked to Napoleon's tomb. After a short ride on the metro, we retrieved our rental car from the hotel and drove to Ile de Paris where we'll stay for two weeks. We went to the grocery store -- called a hypermarchet. It was like a Super Walmart on steroids! It is almost 11 PM and we are all awake and just beginning to think about bed! Hope to post some pics shortly!
